5. It is known that the lanthanides can accomodate up to 12 groups around their trivalent ions. If the Cl− ions would be shared by three Eu3+ ions (as in UCl3), 15 groups would have to be arranged within bonding distance around each Eu3+ ion; this is very improbable.
