AbstractThe sterile insect technique (SIT) is applied as part of an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) approach. Principles of AW-IPM and SIT are explained. A brief history of SIT against tsetse flies is presented. Technical, environmental, and economic feasibility considerations regarding tsetse free zone concept and tsetse SIT are discussed. Several situations where the creation of tsetse free zones and the application of SIT component as part of AW-IPM campaign appears feasible are outlined. Future prospects for tsetse SIT are explored.
