AbstractThis paper provides a preliminary account of the current state of knowledge of Brazilian earthworm biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, economic impact and exploitation by humans. A list of earthworm genera and species found in Brazil, together with their distribution and origin, and the quantitative estimates of earthworm populations in various Brazilian ecosystems are tabulated. Also covered are the: biogeography of Brazilian earthworms; aquatic, semi-aquatic and terrestrial habitats of this taxon; and the Brazilian worm-bait industry. Finally, some considerations for the future of earthworm research in Brazil, are provided.
