Abstract

Background: The current nursing shortage coupled with increased nursing program enrollment and decreased clinical site availability has resulted in a need for innovation related to nursing student clinical experiences. Most clinical experiences are conducted during day-shift hours, resulting in challenges in scheduling as well as student-related nurse fatigue. Method: An alternate experience was designed to enhance student learning during an obstetric clinical rotation. Nursing students were assigned to one precepted night-shift experience in lieu of a previously scheduled day shift with their clinical group. Results: The precepted night shift enhanced the educational clinical experience for nursing students as reported in reflective assignments. In addition, increased staff nurse satisfaction was reported related to nursing student interaction. Conclusion: Integration of alternate clinical experiences such as night shift should be considered as increased nursing school enrollment and decreased availability of clinical sites become more prevalent.
