STRAINS OF TOBACCO RINGSPOT VIRUS ISOLATED FROM SOYBEAN IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants with mosaic disease symptoms averaged 0.9–1.4% of the population in 1979–1981 in eight southwestern Ontario counties. Of the 265 samples collected, 135 and 102 were categorized as tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV) and soybean mosaic virus, respectively. The rest (28 samples) had other viruses. The TRSV isolates were identified on a set of diagnostic hosts. In the 135 TRSV isolates, six different strains were identified, based on a set of indicator plants. The soybean cultivars differed not only in their susceptibility to infection, but also in their symptom expression. Differences were observed in bud blight and local lesion development. None of the soybean cultivars tested were resistant to all six strains of TRSV. All six strains reacted positively to TRSV antiserum and had similar physical properties. Electron microscopy of negatively stained leaf-dip preparations showed that they all had isometric particles of about 30 nm in diameter.Key words: Soybean, tobacco ringspot virus
