1. Callcutt was educated in Yorkshire and graduated from Sheffield University in 1925 with distinction in medicine and football to embark on a surgical career. He rapidly developed skill in obstetrics and gynaecology during resident jobs in Sheffield and then did general surgery in south London. After his marriage to Catherine he had a short period in general practice and worked at Kingsbury Maternity Hospital. At the outbreak of war he was appointed Emergency Medical Service surgeon to Wembley Hospital; he was appointed consultant surgeon soon after the inception of the NHS. John was devoted to surgery, especially trauma work. Living close by the hospital, he was nearly always on call and became the mainstay of the accident and emergency work as well as doing a wide range of general and consulting surgery. Long after his retirement he did locums in a wide range of specialties in neighbouring hospitals. His interests ranged widely;Shirley, John
