Abstract
The mammalian eyelid participates in blinking and eye movements. Blinking requires transient lid movements, whereas the lid movements accompanying eye movements additionally involve maintaining the lid in a new position. Eyelid control evolved so that the lid-closing muscle governs blinks and the lid-opening muscle determines lid position.
