Abstract
Abstract
Single crystals of orthorhombic Li2Ge7O15 with diameters up to 20 mm and lengths of 60 mm have been grown by the Czochralski technique from a stoichiometric melt. The elastic constants measured by ultrasonic methods between 303 and 253 K display a strongly anomalous behaviour in the whole temperature range. At 283.5 K a sharp softening of all quasilongitudinal elastic resistances occurs, indicating a phase transition. The shear resistances and also the lattice constants vary only very slightly, when passing through the transition. The low-temperature phase retains the orthorhombic symmetry of the high-temperature phase. The transition appears to be of mainly second order. The elastic behaviour suggests the existence of a transition mechanism similar to that in the α-β transition of quartz.
