Abstract
This chapter considers the ways in which N-heterocyclic carbenes and phosphines can be prepared from readily-available starting materials. The synthesis of complexes of these ligands, based on metals such as iridium, platinum, ruthenium, chromium, palladium, copper and gold, is also discussed. These species are useful for various transformations, including hydroformylation, metathesis, cross-coupling, and alkene oligomerisation.
