Abstract
Edward Gibbon, author of the six-volume
Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
, died in 1794, the year of birth of George Grote, whose
History of Greece
in 12 volumes offers obvious parallels with Gibbon’s
magnum opus
. The resemblances do not end here, however: both were also Fellows of the Royal Society. I shall look at two aspects of Gibbon’s life: first, his family’s business fortunes and political attitudes and, second, his attitude to science. This is followed by some general comments on Grote, who had a very different upbringing.
