Abstract
Ernest Marsden was born on 19 February 1889 at Rishton near Blackburn in Lancashire. He traced his ancestry to the Marsdens and Holdens, the oldest families in Darwen, Lancashire (Shaw 1889). His grandfather, Fish Holden, great-great-grandson of Timothy Holden (
ca
. 1684 to
ca
. 1774, nicknamed ‘Owd Timothy o’ th’ Looms), married Esther Place, moving to Rishton. In 1885, their daughter Phoebe, Ernest’s mother, married Thomas Marsden (
b
. Blackburn, 1864,
d
. 1925). Thomas Marsden was originally a cotton cloth weaver, but later a household draper and hardware dealer at 68-70 Hermitage Street, Rishton, and he was also choirmaster at Rishton Congregational Chapel. Ernest was the second of a family of four sons (Robert, Ernest, Harold and Sydney) and a daughter, Hilda (Mrs Walter Fish, Blackburn), the youngest.
