Abstract
A recent analysis of C

(CH
3
)
6
showed that the benzene nucleus in that compound is similar, both in structure and in dimensions, to the plane ring of six carbon atoms, each of diameter 1·42 A., previously known to exist in graphite. That being so, it was clear that other benzene compounds should be examined as carefully as possible, to see whether the benzene nucleus is always of the same shape and size. The fully substituted derivatives seemed most likely to give the information desired.
