Abstract
A new examination of the palladium arc spectrum has resulted in the discovery of a type of forbidden transition which has not previously been observed. The level
K

, in particular, is shown to give many more forbidden than allowed lines. The explanation is in the theory of ‘forced’ dipole radiation, a type of Stark effect which is due to the interionic fields in the arc. Additions to the analysis of Pd I are also given.
