Abstract
The mean lifetime of the neutral
π
-meson has been determined by measurements on the ‘direct’ electron pairs associated with nuclear disintegrations and due to an alternative mode of decay, viz.
π
0
→
hv
+
β
+
+
β
-
. The most probable value is 5 x 10
-15
s. The ratio of the probability of this alternative mode of decay to that in which the meson transforms into two photons is 0⋅013 ± 0⋅004.
