Abstract
This study compares the in-class programed instructional procedure developed by H. Gilbert Trythall at Peabody College with a traditional procedure. Freshman music majors at Northeast Louisiana State University were divided into experimental and control groups for this study. A testing instrument, composed of nine sections, was developed to examine each skill area. Data were gathered in a pretest, a midyear test, and a posttest to mitigate the effects of high attrition. An analysis of the data showed significantly greater improvement by the experimental group on the test as a whole.
