Abstract
Relationships among selected attribute variables, pupil achievement and attitude gains, and certain teaching competency measures were studied in 29 elementary music classes over a school year during which pre- and posttests in achievement and attitude were administered. Systematic observation of classroom interactions was made, and five competencies were found to correlate with achievement gains at magnitudes ranging from .20 to .32. Only one competency correlated with attitude gains within the above range. No significant correlations were obtained between the measures of achievement and attitude and attribute variables, such as socio-economic status, grade level, class time, and outside music lessons. A correlation of .35 between achievement gains and attitude gains was obtained.
