Abstract

Excessive scarring in the area of hypotensive glaucoma surgery is still a challenge in ophthalmology as it is the main cause of postoperative IOP elevation. The antiproliferative pharmacologic agents currently used for wound healing modulation are either not effective enough or have poor safety profile. The review provides a brief description of wound healing physiology including cytokines involved in it. It also represents the mechanisms of action and effects of drugs that influence wound healing and are used as antiproliferative agents for prevention of excessive scarring in glaucoma surgery.
