1. David Calder is a Fulbright Fellow and a doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary PhD in Theatre and Drama (IPTD) at Northwestern University. His dissertation examines how street theatre companies and former factory workers negotiate deindustrialization and redevelopment in contemporary France. He has contributed essays on French theatre to the anthologies Shakespeare Beyond English: A Global Experiment (Cambridge University Press, 2013) and A History of Collective Creation (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013)....

Abstract

The street theatre company La Machine has converted the derelict shipyards of Nantes into a cultural destination for an aspiring creative city. The discursive and embodied reconfiguration of the shipyards as both public space and workspace reveals the complex labor fueling creative economies.
