Abstract
In an earlier study Parish in 1988 found that children's perceived hateful behaviors of their parents were associated with diminished self-concepts of their college-age children. In the present study, students' perceptions of hateful behaviors by professors likewise were associated with diminished self-concepts of their college students ( r = .18) as well as how hatefully these students acted toward their professors ( r = .39). Finally, how hatefully students acted toward their professors was also significantly related to how negatively they perceived themselves (i.e., developed a low self-concept) ( r = .17). Explanations and possible implications of these findings are discussed.
