Previous experiments have demonstrated that canine kidneys can be preserved for 24 hours or more following initial perfusion with a solution of intracellular composition (C3) and subsequent ice storage. In the present study the composition of C3 was varied to determine the role of each of the major constituents. The efficacy of the solution was found to depend more on magnesium sulphate than on the potassium content, although potassium assumed a greater importance in perfusates free of magnesium. No variation in composition produced a significant improvement in the results obtained with solution C3 itself.
