Abstract
AbstractA brief review of the energy‐band and valence bond theories of the metallic state is given, followed by an outline of work relating catalytic activity to the solid state. There follows a more detailed discussion of the nature of the adsorbed film on metals, and the reaction path and activated complexes involved in some reactions involving hydrogen on metals and alloys. The role of empty atomic d‐orbitals in the activated complex is emphasised. Finally related studies on oxides are considered. With the exception of oxygen adsorbed on metal oxides, throughout the evidence favours the formation of shared electron bonds between metal or oxide and adsorbed gas. The effect of electron energy levels on these bonds and their reactivity is discussed in favourable instances.
