Abstract
In structural dynamics modelling by means of multidegrees-of-freedom systems within the scope of lumped-parameter techniques, masses and stiffnesses are easily quantifiable, while methods of incorporating damping have traditionally been based on tentative approaches. Here a rigorous technique is proposed where the energy loss per cycle is simulated by a convenient mathematical scheme of representing the viscous dampers as proportional to mass and stiffness values. The level of damping at any one or two selected frequencies can then be controlled. Although the concept is not original, the novelty here is due to its proposed applicability to the lumped-parameter idealizations such as finite elements or mechanical simulation packages.
