Abstract
Tension and compression tests were made on specimens cut from a steel plate which had been prestrained by 1·3 per cent, the specimens being at various angles to the prestraining axis. The Bauschinger effect was evident and a similar effect existed to a lesser degree for specimens with axes perpendicular to the straining direction. Longitudinal and transverse specimens were also tested from plates prestrained in tension by 3 and 5 per cent. The Bauschinger effect was well marked in the longitudinal compression tests but work hardening dominated in the transverse direction.
