Abstract
The mathematical properties of large deformations such as those occurring in rolling and extrusion are different from those of small deformations dealt with in linear elasticity. These properties are explored by matrix algebra. The relation between pure shear and simple shear, and hence the difference between tension and torsion tests, are explained. For practical investigations, a method is presented of representing large deformations as measured from the deformed grid pattern.
