Abstract
This paper reviews and extends the available theories for predicting the hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a ship hull or submerged vessel during manoeuvres in the horizontal plane. Effects of free-surface waves and viscous separation are not considered, but attention is focused instead on recent developments in the theory of low-aspect-ratio geometries, including the effects of vortex sheets shed from sharp trailing edges, and in the use of slender-body theory to predict the manoeuvring characteristics of ships in restricted waters.
