Abstract

This paper discusses a thermally unstable situation in viscous flow of any fluid whose viscosity falls with rising temperature. The existence of the effect is demonstrated by passing oil through small pipes and observing the temperature rise of the pipe wall. The pressure loss is shown to be lower than that predicted by simple theory assuming fluid properties to be constant across the flow.
