Measurements and Evaluations of Drilling Burr Profile

Abstract

A newly developed system for measuring the profiles of the height and thickness of drilling burrs using image-processing techniques is presented. The measurement accuracy of this system was verified through simulations and experimental studies. The verification tests showed that the measurement accuracy is approximately 50 μm. This system was also used for measuring irregular burr profiles, which tend to cause large dispersions in experimental results. In addition to the standard function (measuring the burr profiles), an additional function was integrated into the measurement software. The additional function can be used to evaluate the uniformity of the burr profiles and to remove the influence of irregular burrs from the measured original data. The effectiveness of these additional functions was also verified through experimental studies.
