Abstract
This article is devoted to the history of the formation of geocryology (permafrost) in Russia in the 20th century, as well as the contribution made by St. Petersburg Mining University to the training of professional personnel for this important and rapidly developing science. At the beginning of the 20th century, geocryology developed as a branch of research in engineering geology, but already in 1925-1930 it emerged as an independent science, the formation of which is associated with the names of Russian and Soviet scientists, graduates of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute - V.A. Obruchev, PI. Butov and PI. Melnikov.
