Abstract
Hypercalcemia, though rare is an important cause of diffuse aches and pains. More relevant is the cause, which can sometimes be treatable and at other times not. Here, we present a case of 48-year-old man with lymphadenopathy, hypercalcemia and acute kidney injury who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
This case is about a 48-year-old man who presented with symptoms of hypercalcemia and generalised lymphadenopathy. With a predisposition of EBV infection, Hodgkin’s lymphoma was identified to be the source of hypercalcemia, leading on to the hypercalcemic nephropathy. Hypercalcemia is usually seen with non-hodgkins lymphoma and only a few reports of hypercalcemia associated with Hodgkins lymphoma had been published. The usual mechanism is Vit D dependent, however, in our patient hypercalcemia was probably mediated by PTHrP; since both the vit D and activated vit D levels were normal. The presence of PTHrP mediated hypercalcemia Hodgkin’s lymphoma makes our case rare, as an uncommon presentation of a disease with yet another uncommon mechanism underlying.
