Abstract

Abstract Micelle formation and gegenion binding have been studied in aqueous solutions of primary and quaternary ammonium dodecyl sulphates (amine soaps) by the conductivity method. Critical micelle concentrations decrease markedly with increase in the cation chain length; this phenomenon is due mainly to increase in the free energy of micelle formation. Gegenion binding also increases with increasing cation chain length and reaches 95 per cent for the octyl and higher ammonium salts.
