Abstract
We calculate the energy dissipated by the Landau–Zener mechanism from the collective into the intrinsic channels during nuclear fission. Our results are free of any externally adjusted viscosity coefficient such as Rayleigh's dissipation rate parameter. The high efficiency of the mechanism marks the collective motion as largely diabatic in the prescission stage of deformation. This diabaticity is large enough to be numerically describable by an enlarged class of parametrizations, including Rayleigh's.
