Abstract
The continuous emission bands at 4850 Å and 3350 Å, attributed to the decay of electronically excited mercury molecules, have been studied in a flow system in which Hg 63P1 atoms were generated in the presence of nitrogen. The mechanism presented to account for the formation and decay of these eximers incorporates the assumption that these bands are derived by spontaneous emission from the A30u− and A31u states of the mercury molecule respectively. It is proposed that the A31u state is the precursor of the A30u− state.
