Abstract
A method is described for obtaining a continuous record of the amount of flight activity occurring in a group of flying insects. The test insects are kept in an earthed metal cage. When an insect flies it accumulates a positive charge on its body. This charge influences a sensitive electrometer-probe in the center of the cage. The impulse resulting from the flight is amplified by the electrometer and is recorded as a deflection on a pen-recorder chart. By counting the number of deflections in a given time an activity curve for the test insects can be plotted.
