Abstract
This paper consists of Part I and Part II. Part I contains a discussion of the evaluation of the dielectric constant of an adsorbed phase for a system which contains a small volume fraction of adsorbing solid. The method is similar to one employed earlier, but treats the case of spherical particles rather than spherical voids and employs the volume average macroscopic field of a phase rather than the volume average internal field. Part II contains the application of the correlation function method of Kubo to the assignment of the macroscopic dielectric properties of the adsorbed phase. The correlation function is developed for a system of rigid harmonic oscillators and used to establish the formulae for the static polarization and the resonance behavior of such a system. The results agree with earlier derivations by Kurbatov, by Benson, Channen, and McIntosh, and by Fröhlich.
