Abstract
Spin temperature experiments are reported in β-phase palladium hydride (β-Pd HX) where X = 0.80, 0.75, and 0.71 at a temperature of 40 K. These nuclear magnetic resonance experiments serve to verify the existence of a proton spin temperature in this nonstoichiometric alloy. Further, the experiments provide values of the local field [Formula: see text] at the proton sites; the parameter δ, which is a measure of the correlation of the fluctuating magnetic fields throughout the sample; and the Knight shift. The measured local field increases as the concentration decreases, in contrast to the behaviour predicted for a rigid lattice and dipolar interactions. The correlation parameter increases linearly with concentration. The Knight shift measurements are supplemented by measurements of T1zT and are compared with the prediction of the Korringa relation.
