Abstract

Evidence (chemical trapping by aniline, and nmr and laser–Raman spectroscopy) is presented for the presence of ketenes in heated solutions of carboxylic acids in fuming H2SO4. The intermediacy of ketenes in α-chlorination catalyzed by strong acids is suggested.
