Abstract
The infrared absorption of single crystals of sodium formate has been measured in the region of 250 cm−1 to 4 000 cm−1. Thin sections cut perpendicular to the unique axis were employed and spectra were recorded with light polarized at various angles in this plane. It has been possible to assign unambiguously all of the infrared active internal fundamentals of the formate ion including the overlapping v2 and v5 modes. In addition, three lattice modes at 57, 107, and 138 cm−1 have been identified.
