Abstract
Using the chemical bond theory of dielectric description, the chemical bond parameters of the M-, W-type hexagonal barium ferrites were calculated. The hardness of BaFe12O19 and BaFe18O27 were calculated. The calculated hardness of BaFe12O19 is 5.9 GPa, which is in agreement with the experimental values. The calculated hardness of planes parallel to the c axis of BaFe18O27 is 5.5 GPa, which is smaller than that of BaFe12O19..
