Abstract
The problem of how to deduce, from the angular distribution of emitted γ-rays, the properties of a system in which radioactive nuclei are oriented is considered. A scheme is proposed for measuring an arbitrary angular distribution and for finding the axes which give the simplest description of this distribution. The permissible forms for the Hamiltonian of the nuclei are discussed. Relationships are deduced between the symmetries of the angular distribution of γ-rays, the crystal structure, and the various terms in the Hamiltonian.
