Surface Distributions of Alpha Particles from Odd-A Nuclei

Abstract

The alpha distributions on the nuclear surface are calculated for a number of odd-A alpha-emitting nuclei by an approximate method based on Nosov's work. The calculations are limited to alpha partial waves of l ≤ 4. An inspection of distributions shows little variation with A, unlike the distributions in the case of even–even alpha emitters. The lack of variation is interpreted as due to the screening influence of the unpaired odd nucleon. It is also concluded that there exists a possibility of significantly large relative phases between alpha waves before penetration of the barrier in odd-A nuclei.
