Abstract
Abstract
Neonatal mastauxe is a fairly common condition of enlarged breasts in neonates. It is often incorrectly called ‘mastitis neonatorum’. Falling levels of oestrogen after birth are thought to stimulate prolactin secretion which in turn promotes the hypertrophy of breast tissue. Undue manipulation of enlarged neonate’s breasts, a common practice in Indian culture, may complicate the condition, even mandating surgery. The role of nurses in counselling and teaching the family in such cases is important. This case report presents a baby born by lower segment caesarean section in our unit with neonatal mastauxe.
