Serum Calcium and Phosphorus Concentration in Egyptian Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty liver disease

Abstract

Background and aim Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. NAFLD is a multisystem disease that affecting the liver and extrahepatic organs. This study aimed to assess serum calcium, phosphorus levels in patients with NAFLD, and to investigate the association between NAFLD and serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Patients and methods A case–control study was conducted on 200 patients; 100 diagnosed with NAFLD cross-matched with 100 individuals without NAFLD regarding to age, sex, and BMI. Serum calcium and phosphorus levels were assessed in both studied groups. Results Patients with NAFLD had low levels of serum calcium compared to individuals without NAFLD with highly significant P value less than 0.001. Conclusion NAFLD was associated with decreased level of serum calcium.
