Abstract
ABSTRACT:
Tumor lysis syndrome is an oncologic emergency caused by the release of intracellular material, such as potassium, phosphate, and nucleic acids, into the bloodstream from the disintegration (lysis) of tumor cells. This condition, which is characterized by electrolyte imbalances, can be life-threatening, causing arrhythmias, seizures, acute kidney injury, and multiple organ failure. The prevention and treatment of tumor lysis syndrome requires immediate recognition of patients at risk for its development. With this knowledge, nurses can better manage and monitor treatments, thereby preventing complications and achieving better patient outcomes.
