Abstract
Abstract
Purpose Anastomosis of ileocolic resection has been widely performed using a linear stapling device. However, little is known regarding the experience and outcomes of using circular stapling in such anastomosis. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 66 patients who underwent right hemicolectomy, or extended right hemicolectomy from January 1, 2016 to February 1, 2022 at a single center, performed by a single surgeon. The data included both circular stapling and linear stapling ileocolic anastomosis techniques. Results Patients who underwent right hemicolectomy using circular stapling ileocolic anastomosis had a significantly shorter OR time (P = 0.042). Also the length of hospital stay and time of drain removal was significantly shortened (P = 0.005 and 0.023, respectively) compared to linear stapler technique. Conclusion No substantial difference between the two methods of anastomosis was noted. Although the feasibility and safety for performing circular stapling ileocolic anastomosis was assessed, a larger sample size and a longer follow up period are needed to validate the findings.
