Objective: The rising disease burden of diabetes mellitus globally is a major public health priority. Depressive disorder is also one of the common and overwhelming complication among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which results increase in the number of diabetic complications. Therefore, this study aimed to identify prevalence and associated factors of depression among type 2 diabetes patients.
Result: Institutional based cross-sectional study was employed among 575 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellites in Bahir Dar public hospitals from March 01- to April-01. Systematic random sampling method was employed to select participants. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 tool was used for assessing depression. For analysis, descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression models were used. The prevalence of depression was 41.39 %, (95% CI; 37-45). Poor sleep quality, poor social support, having irregular follow up, and low physical activity were factors significantly associated with depression among individuals with type 2 diabetes melilites. Promoting social support at any aspect of health care service is important to minimize depression. Moderate regular physical exercise is also needed to improve the overall mental health and depression.
