Abstract

Abstract Taking issue with Anthropocene, deep ecology, and technological determinism, the introduction lays out this work's framework composed of the Marxist ecological notions of metabolic rift, the romantic legacy, and the Frankfurt School's critical ecology. Under capitalism, the metabolic rift manifests in the alienation of nature and of labor. The system of accumulation and profit, bent on the domination of nature and labor, is the major source of ecological crises. The introduction addresses alternative modes of production where ecological bonds between humans and nature are maintained through embodied and ecological labor. Through technology and associated labor, humans can regulate and control metabolism between ourselves and nature and among ourselves, changing environments while changing ourselves.
