Abstract
The travel and tourism industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in today's Indian global economy. The fast growth of the industry is not only generating jobs for millions, but also conducive on a large scale to the entire economy of the world. Pilgrimage tourism in Chidambaram is a popular form of spiritual tourism that attracts thousands of devotees every year. Chidambaram is a holy town located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India, and is considered one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the country. The town is renowned for its ancient temple dedicated to Lord Nataraja, a form of Lord Shiva, and is also known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional arts, and dance forms. In Tamil Nādu, there are a number of tourist places but pilgrimage tourism in Chidambaram has its own importance. Therefore, it attracts a large number of pilgrims from various parts of the world. This chapter is an attempt to study the pilgrimage tourism on the overall development of the place and moreover aims at the challenges which the tourism industry is facing in Chidambaram.
