Abstract

This chapter begins by providing an overview of education in the English-speaking Caribbean with a clear focus on the many challenges educators and students alike face given the limited resources and the low socio-economic conditions of many of its citizens. Next the author explores the nature of the 21st century learner in the context of the Caribbean child, then the characteristics of online learning in the Caribbean is explored followed by a brief history of the development of online learning in the English-speaking Caribbean. The author then examines existing research on two motivational theories, the self-determination theory (SDT) and the attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) model and outlines how educators can continue to use the recommended strategies in traditional classrooms as well as online. Finally, the author concludes by making recommendations for motivating learners post pandemic.
