Abstract

The role of the teacher leader needs to be implemented in the school leadership structure to address the demands current roles in education cannot address themselves. This chapter will provide a solution to a current problem in education; educators, especially school principals, do not have time nor resources to fulfill demands that are brought to education in the 21st century. Using current literature analyzing the current school leadership structure, the role of the principal, the distributed leadership theory, and teacher leadership, it is clear that a structure implementing teacher leadership into education is necessary. However, there is a gap in current research on how to properly implement teacher leadership in education, and there are discrepancies on what teacher leadership responsibilities are. Defining what a teacher leader is and outlining the responsibilities for the role, this chapter will show that with the proper application of teacher leadership in a refurbished school leadership structure, success will occur for students and educators.
