Abstract

Billions of dollars in funding for infrastructure development are managed by multilateral development banks. Due to their function as development financiers, they are vulnerable to fraud and corruption, both internally inside their organizations and externally from political stakeholders given that they are frequently state-owned businesses. Historically, they have relied on national law enforcement agencies to investigate corruption-related activities. However, multilateral development banks (MDBS) have been acting more proactively in recent years to combat corruption. The African Development Bank is one of several global multilateral development banks that have started to play a role in recent years. This chapter discusses its work.
